The Top 5 Ways to Make Working from Home Work for You

Kamau Kamau , MA., November 28, 2022April 22, 2026

Working from home can be both rewarding and challenging. In order to make working from home work for you, you need to choose the right business model, set up an office space, find the right balance between your personal life and your work life, and decide whether you want to keep a day job or go full-time as a freelancer. The good news? There are plenty of resources out there to help you do all of these things! Here are 5 of them.

1) Set up a dedicated workspace

The first step in making working from home work is setting up a dedicated workspace. This means finding a quiet, distraction-free area that you can call your own. Bring in some plants and pictures that make you happy and set up a desk or table with the tools of your trade.

2) Get dressed for work

It can be hard to feel productive when you’re at home, but there are a few ways that can make it easier.

-Invest in some work clothes. It might feel like a waste of money at first, but once you start wearing them on your off days, you’ll get used to the idea of working from home. -Be prepared! Have all the things you need on hand before starting work and don’t rely on taking time out of your day to grab something that you need.

3) Take breaks

It is important to take breaks while working from home. Try not to work more than four hours straight without taking a break, and don\’t work on the weekends. Take time off every day, even if it\’s just an hour in the morning or evening. Getting out of the house will help you feel less isolated and give you space away from your desk so you can come up with new ideas. Let people know when you\’re going to be gone: While working at home doesn\’t have strict office hours, some days may be busier than others depending on the project. Letting people know when you\’re going to be gone will save them wondering where you are when they need something done. Turn notifications off: Working remotely means that there are fewer distractions around your workspace and this helps us focus better. Turning notifications off gives us that extra boost of productivity we need!

4) Set regular hours

One of the most important things you can do when working from home is set your own hours. If you don\’t, it can be easy to find yourself working all day and into the night. The good thing about working from home is that you can work at your own pace and decide how many hours a day you want to work. Establishing regular hours will help maintain a balance with your family and personal life. In addition, if you need to stop working early one day or take an extra long lunch, it’s easier when you know what\’s going on in advance.

Don’t answer emails in the evening: Your email should not be available after business hours because this can cause distractions after dinner time as well as pull away time from your family. Even if there are no new messages coming in, checking emails just once an hour will only add more stress and anxiety to what is already a stressful situation.

5) Connect with colleagues

It’s easy to feel isolated when working from home, but there are some great ways you can make things easier on yourself. One is by teaming up with a colleague who works remotely and scheduling regular meetings so that you’re still in contact with people. Another is setting up an office outside of the house – no matter how small – where you can go and focus on work without distractions. A third suggestion is using the kitchen table or couch as your office space: having somewhere comfortable makes it more likely you’ll use it. And finally, consider getting out of the house for lunch or coffee break: being around other people makes it more likely you’ll return to work afterwards!
